The Bologne family arrived in Guadalupe in 1654 and decided to build the sugar refinery on the fertile soils of the Soufrière (on volcanic soils). In 1830, Jean-Antoine Ame-Noel, who was the first black man “free from birth” to become the owner of a rather large land (114 hectares), passed by and in 1887 the sugar refinery became a distillery. Years of mixed fortunes followed until 1930 when Louis Sargenton-Callard acquired the distillery. With great patience he rebuilt the original property by also acquiring the nearby Beauvallon and La Coulisse. In addition, Louis invests in the acquisition of new land in the eastern part of the volcano, making the distillery independent from the supply of sugar cane.
